A Morning Ritual for Greater Wellness

I have never established or completed a full diet routine, exercise goals always fall flat in time, and I weaned myself off of antidepressants because I didn’t want to manage them daily. I am not naturally inclined towards routine. But I am coming to rely on the therapeutic consistency of ritual as I navigate working from home and living in near-complete isolation (with two cats) due to the global pandemic.


Oxford Languages defines “ritual” as “a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order.” As someone who is not particularly religious, the idea of “ritual” always seemed a little daunting to approach. But I have been a fan of moon cycle rituals for some time now, and find that intention-setting and positive manifestation work wonders for my psyche and productivity.

So why not try it out on a daily basis, or at least several times a week, formalizing the process and putting my effort and intention into a daily practice? I wondered whether it might increase my overall productivity, put me in the right mindset, or even improve my health. During these tumultuous, emotional times, when everything seems a bit more uncertain than usual, I have found that it can be especially rewarding to hold ritualistic space that anchors me to the day.

Creating your morning ritual.

First, you’ve got to hone your ritual.

Know that it can take a lot of time and tweaking to find your comfortable ritualistic space. Some pointers are to reach outside of your comfort zone to test new (to you) products and practices as you design your ritual practice. Your ritual should suit you and the attitude you want to surround your day with.

Perhaps you begin the day with a walk, or movement, or writing a few "morning pages" to get the creativity flowing. The important part of making your ritual stick is that it's true to you.

Start Your Ritual with a Warm Beverage.

Even making CBD tea can be a ritual. As you unleash your inner Alchemist, testing out the medicinal benefits of nature's herbs, you can focus on your senses and the experience of each step to help cultivate mindfulness — an evidence-based stress-reduction technique — to really relish in wellness.

The CBD tea ritual below was inspired by a small glass bottle of some of the most delicious CBD tincture I have ever imbibed. (For the sake of transparency: it was gifted to me by the brand, but I genuinely recommend it.)

When I wake, I boil water. I start most of my mornings with a warm beverage. If you’re like me, you have a variety of tea kettles to pop onto the stove and a small amount of patience to wait for the water to boil. I’m a big fan of Vahdam Tea and their Authentic Japanese Matcha Green Tea Powder.

Per the Minty CBD Matcha Latte recipe on the Molecular CBD website

  • Pour ¼ cup of the boiling water into a mug 

  • Add 1.5 teaspoons of matcha powder and 

  • 1 cup of almond or oat milk

  • Add a dropper of CBD Drops

  • A sprinkle of cinnamon on top

Note:  If you want to get really fancy, froth the milk before adding it to your cup.

If you’re not into matcha, this glorious little bottle of full-spectrum CBD can still be added into other morning beverages, including teas, tea lattes, smoothies, coffee (link), and more. The recipe was recommended to me by the owner and formulator of the product herself.

I am also a very big fan of the CBD brand, Noirebud. Noirebud’s G-Mint Tea, goes down best alone or with a little drizzle of manuka honey, but they have other options like a rose tea, a vanilla tea, and a strawberry immunity blend. If you're a full-on tea fanatic, there's even a subscription tea company, Sips By.

Regardless of the tea or warm beverage that you choose to imbibe your CBD with, dosage is key. For those of you who are just beginning your journey with CBD, it is best to dose lighter and work your way up. Molecular CBD offers a dosage guide. Another important factor to consider when selecting a CBD product or tincture is bio-availability. When a blend is nanotized, it can absorb more rapidly into the body. When it is water-soluble, or hydrophilic, you are getting the most bio-available form of cannabidiol. Sip in a peaceful spot.

Once my tea is prepared, I take a seat in a quiet, plant-filled corner in my apartment. I light an herb bundle, my gorgeous cleansing wands of choice from Steadfast Flowers. I like to switch it up often, but to date I can tell you these are the smudge sticks and herbal wands I’ve been drawn to the most.

Since burning sage is not considered the most eco-friendly practice, you can also consider investing in a space-clearing spray like Sage & Salt Smokeless Smudge Room Spray, $35, a witch-owned line that is even sold at Bergdorf Goodman—how luxe!

Breathe Mindfully.

Then, I work on breathing exercises. Never underestimate the impact of deep, belly breathing—not to mention, adequate oxygenation levels—on anxiety and well-being.

Breathwork can be as simple as turning on a two-minute breathing exercise on your smartwatch, watching a YouTube video, or researching other breathing techniques to try, from yogic techniques to esoteric Kundalini traditions.

This ritual is all about enjoying a warm beverage slowly, engaging as many senses as possible, and recognizing your breath as a source of anchoring stability throughout your day. Starting your day grounded is one of the simplest things you can do for yourself, and you can get started by just finding time to just sit and breathe. You really can't go wrong boosting that calming effect with a dose of minty CBD in a gorgeous, frothy beverage.

Why to Practice Ritual

“I never had a steady morning ritual until about one year ago and it changed my life,” admits David. “It was important to create a structured routine for me in the morning. Then, once that routine was formed, the real fun began because my body started to trust me as I was showing up for her daily. I was able to honor what my body wants.”

What ties all of this together is the realization that I am honoring myself in those moments. I am investing my time and my energy into my connection to the world around me, cultivating confidence that has proven to ramp up my preparedness at a time when motivation is lacking.

At the end of the day, it may sound esoteric and fluffy, but ritual creates another layer of support in my ever-growing toolkit of wellness resources. Plus, when I know I am taking care of myself, then I am able to better take care of others.
