31 Clean Beauty + Wellness Launches to Snag from September 2020
Updated: Oct 6
Late — but worth the wait.
Virgo season may be over, but it's not October just yet! We've still got another week of September to go, so you can still indulge in the novelty of these clean beauty launches from the last month. Consider replacing the old and outdated (and sometimes toxic) skincare products from your past with some of the cleaner alternatives below. There's no time like the present to start making wellness-conscious choices; after all, it's 2020—we'll take all the help we can get.
The makers of my favorite skin-saving hypochlorous acid face spray launched these non-toxic glosses on September 1. It falls somewhere between a shiny gloss and a nourishing balm, infused with apricot kernel and raspberry seed oils to soothe and protect your pout with a sheer coat of tinted shine in four, semi-sheer, neutral-friendly shades. #JustAddMilky, or so they say.
In addition to reformulating some of brand's hero supplements for antioxidant protection, hydration, and glow, the folks at Beauty Chef added this adaptogen-packed supplement to rejuvenate red, fatigued, and stressed skin to their ingestible lineup. Adaptogens literally help buffer the body from the effects of stress with the potential for profound relief when incorporated into your lifestyle—and the same can be said for your skin. With probiotic-rich, bio-fermented ingredients derived from papaya and other natural sources, vitamins B3, B6 and B12, licorice root extract, and more, you can nourish your gut and witness the beautifying results firsthand. As within, so without.
After six years in the making, these luxe little lippies have launched in thirteen different shades to make our WFH days more glamorous. The formula incorporates watermelon seed, cucumber seed, and carrot seed oils to keep the lips smoothed and nourished while hyaluronic acid plumps and pearl pigments yield a glossy, glass-like finish. It's a bonafide lip oil treatment with cosmetic properties to boot.
The cruelty-free and vegan brand's clean beauty standards include ban over 1,500 ingredients which can be read about here.
Texture-wise, this silky cleanser falls somewhere between a cleansing milk and a balm, rinsing away makeup, sunscreen, and grime from your day. The non-comedogenic (i.e., non-pore-clogging) jelly is packed with antioxidants from rosehip oil, anti-inflammatory and rosacea-treating MSM (natural sulphur), alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin E. Vitamin C-rich grapefruit, anti-microbial lavender, and free radical-fighting beta carotene complete the gently brightening formula. Upon contact with water, the cleanser emulsifies into a milky lather that is best rinsed away with a wash cloth to leave gently cleansed skin behind.
Naturopathica developed their first retinol collection, the star of which is this facial oil blend containing 1% retinol, holy basil, and bakuchiol, nature's most-potent retinol alternative. You can expect boosted collagen production, fewer breakouts, and improvement to fine lines and texture thanks to retinol, while the adaptogenic herb, holy basil (or tulsi), delivers a potent dose of antioxidants along with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
Other newcomers include the Passion Fruit & Retinol Ageless Eye Serum, an Argan & Retinol Advanced Wrinkle Remedy Night Gel Cream, and a retinol-free Argan & Peptide Advanced Wrinkle Remedy Water Cream if you're a retinol-phobe. (No judgment.)
P.S. Learn about optimizing the use of retinol in your anti-aging or prejuvenation regimen with the use of EGF in my piece on Coveteur here.
Envelop your locks in hydrating, botanical nourishment infused with the purifying energy of clear quartz crystal. White Willow Bark extract balances scalp sebum levels, while Monoi extract softens strands, and amla, ginseng, and Yerba mate improve scalp circulation. Marshmallow root, prickly pear, and hibiscus join forces to help to detangle as cupuacu, shea butter, and Aloe Vera juice hydrate. Great if you are in search of a deep conditioning masque or treatment, this conditioner is best applied and left to sit before being rinsed.
The brand so nice, they named it twice... Just kidding—that's actually a quote from Pineapple Express. Khus+Khus skincare is a green, clean, anti-inflammatory line that uses some of nature's most powerful, skin-saving ingredients. Their latest launch is this golden milk-inspired cleanser, featuring anti-inflammatory, organic turmeric, anti-bacterial and exfoliating Manuka honey from New Zealand, and soothing sea buckthorn oil. Use a dime-sized amount on dry skin, emulsify it with warm water, then rinse for a cleansed and calm complexion.
On September 1, this UK-based brand of organic, sustainable period products launched stateside. Made from 100% organic cotton, these hypoallergenic goodies are naturally sanitized using oxygen and are totally free from chlorine bleach. Even their applicators are sustainability-minded, made from recyclable sugarcane using absolutely no petroleum-based plastic. Plus, they're PETA-certified, biodegradable, and free of dyes, fragrances, and allergens. The line includes options both with and without applicators, as well as Oeko-Tex organic bamboo pads in plant-based wrappers.
Doing away with plastic packaging is one way that brands have moved towards zero-waste initiatives. The makers of a clean, aluminum-free deodorant, Each&Every, just launched their first haircare product in the form of a packaging-free shampoo bar that should last for the duration of two typical shampoo bottles. Using only EWG-verified ingredients, this solid shampoo is gentle on the scalp and lathers to cleanse and nourish your locks.
The cruelty-free and vegan brand formulates all products without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, synthetic dyes, or synthetic fragrances. Glycerin, argan and avocado oils, and shea butter are just some of the earth-based hydrators used, while sodium palmate and sodium palm kernelate cleanse, and essential oils from lavender and lemon complete the green experience.
Now that the clean fragrance brand Heretic is available at Sephora, the masses can access truly "clean" fragrances—a rarity, to be sure. Perfume and fragrances are some of the most notoriously "dirty" sectors of the beauty industry, which is why we adore this rebellious line of luxury clean fragrance. Their latest scent profile to launch is Dirty Vanilla, an earthy and woody scent comprised of vanilla, sandalwood, and coriander. Their cheeky branding speaks to their trailblazing nature; but trust us, reform is needed—and these clean fragrance pioneers deserve our support.
Camila Coelho's luxury clean beauty line just launched last summer, and now there is even more newness to enjoy. The face mist contains Brazilian guarana and papaya extracts, and Buriti and Bataua oils, to tone and refine your pores sans parabens, sulfates, phthalates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, GMOs, silicones, artificial fragrance, or colorants. Use the EWG-verified facial mist to prep your makeup, set your makeup, or simply to pamper your mug throughout the day.
Other new launches include a beauty oil, as well as an upcoming hair texturized and beauty palette.
Layering body oil blends under moisturizer or body butter is a personal favorite post-shower hack for smooth, hydrated, and silky skin. Native Atlas launched their Universal Oil collection on September 1, and OMNIS is my latest addition to my body care lineup. Made up of vetiver and jojoba, along with sesame, sunflower, carrot seed, and patchouli oils, as well as other botanical and floral extracts that include anti-inflammatory turmeric, it can be used on your face, body, or hair and will abolish itchiness or irritation on the legs after shaving. Tip: Use it beneath Skincando Combat-Ready Balm for unbelievably smoothed, calm skin on the legs.
As far as foundations go, this luxury launch from the leading clean-luxury brand is quite reasonably priced. Available in 24 shades of skin-nourishing goodness in light-to-medium coverage, star ingredients include hyaluronic acid, Dioscorea Batatis—the so-called Root of Light, soothing chamomile water and Spilanthes Acmella flower extract, with muscle-relaxing properties (think: nature's botox). This is a must-try for clean cosmetic connoisseurs.
Schwanen Garten is a new clean, K-Beauty brand that focuses on harnessing the power of antioxidants—and the beauty of the ampoule above is that it can be used as a skincare booster when added to your favorite serums. According to the free radical model of aging, antioxidants—which repair and mitigate oxidative stress caused by said free radicals—hold the key to skin repair and preservation. The brand's founders' research led to the creation of Schwanen Garten Antioxidant Source, a bio-available powerhouse of the formidable agents that promote collagen and elastin synthesis to aid with firmness and smoothing finelines, and even aid with hyperpigmentation. They combine their star active with various extracts (i.e., green tea extract, licorice root extract, and more) as well as buzzy actives including Niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate.
Used before sexual activity (partnered or solo), this water-based serum is designed to enhance the experience, aiding with dryness and/or tension impacting your experience. As for CBD—well, if you've ever tried CBD lube (like the one by Foria), the experience really speaks for itself.
OSHIHANA is another CBD-inclusive company that is devoted to normalizing self-care around sexual wellness, one of the latest frontiers in women's health. Formulated in collaboration with a women-led team of MDs, NDs, Their Oregon-based line includes THC-inclusive products, while their hemp-based products can be purchased online.
Their sex oil makes use of CBD and CBG (the "mother of all cannabinoids") to intensify your sexual experiences, while this glistening—literally—bath soak immerses you in plant-based, biodegradable Gold BioGlitz. The soak contains epsom salt, mineral-rich pink Himalayan salt, baking soda, organic jojoba oil, and a bevy of skin-friendly, certified organic essential oils and extracts, from tea tree to grape, so that you can emerge from the tub sparkling like a vampire from Twilight.
100% of proceeds from their apparel line goes towards supporting the decriminalization of drug crimes.
As part of the effort to encourage voting this election year, Iris & Romeo developed a flattering-for-all fuchsia shade of their plumping, peptide-infused lip balm. Partnering with Mandana Dayani and I Am A Voter, coating your pout in this petal-inspired, clean balm is an ode to the Suffragists and the passage of the 19th Amendment. Back in the day, the Suffragists wore "unladylike" red lipstick as part of their uniform for political protest. Now, to honor of the 100th anniversary of their efforts, this fuchsia channels the same trailblazing spirit of female empowerment and inspired political action. $5 from each sale will be donated to I Am A Voter.
Everything about this clean fragrance screams chic. The Clean at Sephora line dropped three new products— a new fragrance, a must-try home diffuser kit, and this sumptuous CBD body cream. Featuring 500mg of CBD, maritime pine bark extract for a boost of antioxidants, and nourishing shea butter, the vegan, cruelty-free body product comes in recyclable packaging.
The sulfate-, paraben-, and phthalate-free scrub exfoliates skin of the scalp with sea salt, while avocado, peppermint, and eucalyptus oil provide refreshing nourishment. Healing witch hazel, calming arnica flower extract, and hydrating aloe leaf juice complete the treatment. "Performing scalp massages and brushing daily is an important part of self-care, and part of Ayurveda and holistic medicine [that has been used] therapeutically in some cultures for 5,000 years," shares hair and scalp expert Philip B., founder of Philip B. Botanicals Haircare. "[C]irculation, oxygenation, stimulation, and calming benefits through the sensory network in the scalp [release] endorphins and serotonin."
The newest way to practice aromatherapy on-the-daily is with these lipstick-sized, nasal inhalers. Hellen is a reiki-practitioner and aromatherapy expert whose wellness line already offers the reiki- and crystal-infused bath salts of our dreams. Now, she has designed seven different aromatherapy blends with different intentions—Manifest, Ground, Center, Expansion, Restoration, Awaken, and Tranquility—to meet our needs in these trying times. Make it a part of your daily wellness ritual, and pair it with a supremely centering sound bath session (available on her site) to get the maximum effect.
This wellness launch is at the top of our wish lists. Combining the detoxifying benefits of FAR Infrared therapy with pulsed electromagnetic (PEMF) therapy and crystal healing, this mat truly accounts for our holistic wellness. Use it to recover more quickly from exercise, to boost your immune systems, to reduce inflammation, to achieve deeper meditative states, to reduce stress, or to sleep better. To learn more about the benefits of infrared heat, read my piece about infrared yoga on Nécessité. You can also learn more about the benefits of PEMF therapy at the HigherDose blog at this link.
On September 4, these low sugar, functional wellness drinks incorporate therapeutic dosages of adaptogenic herbs to help you attain desired mental states became available. Whether you need a bit more pep in your step, require assistance with focus, hope to settle down, or wish for a restful night's sleep, a functional beverage awaits. Using herbs that range from holy basil and ashwagandha, to ginseng and rhodiola, you will find yourself buffered from the effects of stress as you go about your day (or night) courtesy of a health-conscious formula with no artificial sweeteners. In case you're wondering, the taste is mild like a watered down juice or tea.
The makers of one of the industry's most highly lauded retinols (beloved by dermatologists and celebrity estheticians alike) now offers their first-ever men's product. Designed to be used once or twice per day, this single-step face treatment is the perfect way to introduce the man in your life to a skincare regimen in baby steps. Packed with ceramides, anti-inflammatory extracts, linoleic acids, and even a bit of salicylic acid, it has been shown to improve the appearance of pores, to moderate sebum production, to calm redness, and ameliorate fine lines and wrinkles in just four weeks. Plus, it can be used along with the line's retinol at night, and sun protection by day, to enhance results.
Improve skin tone, texture, and balance pH with this brightening concoction of exfoliant acids. While toning the skin, a combination of citric, malic, pyruvic, and glycolic acids remove dead skin cells, while anti-inflammatory extracts, anti-pollution algae, and green and white teas impart antioxidants galore. Glycerin and aloe juice hydrate. The clean beauty brand is also committed to Credo's radical transparency initiative when it comes to fragrances, as the unregulated term can typically mean exposure to unwelcome additives like phthalates.
No look is complete without a little lash adornment, making the leading clean beauty brand's new mascara a must. The oversized brush is fantastic; it is slightly curved and makes for seamless application that fans your lashes out to fluffy, separated perfection. Curl them before and after for added oomph.
As we fend with the onslaught of mask-induced "mascne," we have a new alcohol-free topical treatment to add to your anti-blemish arsenals. Willow bark extract, azelaic acid, and sulfur exfoliate, unclog, and prevent scarring, tea tree oil and Zinc combat bacterial overgrowth, and vitamin C helps to heal. Consider the clean, overnight cocktail of pimple-fighting skincare actives the next time you notice breakouts.
The need for sunscreen continues year round, which is why this high-SPF, baby-safe, non-nano Zinc oxide formula is worthy of your consideration. It's sadly sold out but should be back in stock soon.
Any interest in a clean highlighter? Notable ingredients include coconut, castor, jojoba, and rosehip oils, among others—most of which are certified organic and pesticide-free. Available in three different pearlescent shades, this clean, vegan brand from Canada also makes a charitable contribution with each purchase of these luminizing cream bronzers. Partial proceeds from the sales of the luminizers will be donated to The Urban Native Youth Organization's Overly Creative Minds program which helps youth pursue art of all mediums, as well as The Eastside Culture Crawl's art program, Studio 101, which pairs inner-city children with professional artists for weeklong, in-studio placements.
Ceramides are like the glue that holds skin cells together, making them a critical component of the skin barrier, aiding with moisture retention and sensitivity. The rich cream above also contains buckwheat honey with propolis and royal jelly for its humectant properties, and fig fruit extract and osmolytes for plumping moisture.
The makers of the Mighty Patch—the hydrocolloid pimple patch that flatens zits overnight—launched this trusty little container for storage. Featuring two separate compartments for your classic, daytime, microdart, or spot-fading patches, you can now keep the contents of your beauty cabinet organized.
